Niacin (nicotinic acid) has been used as an effective cholesterol-lowering agent for many years by clinicians. The main benefit of niacin is that it effectively lowers triglycerides. It also lowers the total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol while at the same time raising HDL levels, thus establishing a favourable lipid profile in the heart patient

With the additional benefit of lowering homocysteine levels, folic acid is also included.
